Four things decide it. We check all four before recommending anything.
Your inverter
Some inverters are built to pair with a battery, some need a second inverter, and some need replacing. It decides which battery options make sense.
Your electrical panel
The main panel’s rating and the space in it decide how the battery connects, and whether a separate backup panel is needed.
AC or DC coupling
A battery can connect on the AC side, beside your existing inverter, or on the DC side, sharing one hybrid inverter with the panels. The diagram below shows the difference.

Keep essentials running in an outage, back up the whole home, or store daytime solar for the evening. Each one sizes the battery differently.

What backup actually means
Essential circuits
The circuits you cannot do without, such as the refrigerator, lights, internet and a few outlets, move to a separate backup panel. In an outage, the battery runs only those. A smaller battery can carry them longer.
Whole home
The battery backs up the whole house. It takes more storage, and sometimes more than one battery, especially with air conditioning, a pool pump or an electric range.

Battery questions
Can I add a battery to the solar I already have?
Usually. It depends on your inverter and your electrical panel, so we check compatibility first and tell you what the options are before recommending anything.
What is the difference between AC and DC coupling?
An AC coupled battery connects beside your existing inverter and has its own. A DC coupled battery shares one hybrid inverter with the panels. AC coupling usually suits an existing system; DC coupling often suits a new one.
Will a battery power my whole home in an outage?
It can, if it is sized and connected for that. Many homes back up only essential circuits, such as the refrigerator, lights and internet, through a separate backup panel, which needs a smaller battery.
